Please note: This article only applies to merchants using Shopify as their

e-commerce platform. All other platforms do not currently have the ability to send orders containing multiple coupon codes to Refersion for conversion processing.

For some of our Shopify merchants, they may elect to allow customers to stack multiple discounts on a single order. This allows customers to receive a greater discount on their purchase. However, what happens when Refersion receives these types of orders? How does order attribution work? There are a couple of different scenarios that can play out, and we'll walk through each one below!

For some added context, please note that in general Refersion is NOT designed to attribute a single order to multiple affiliates.

Two non-affiliate coupon codes are used on a single order.

In this scenario since no affiliate coupon code is being used, then Refersion will not attribute a coupon conversion to any affiliate. A different type of conversion may still be recorded though. For example, if the customer clicked an affiliate's link before placing their order, then Refersion would create a link conversion.

One affiliate coupon code is combined with a non-affiliate coupon codes on a single order.

In this scenario since only one affiliate's coupon code is being used, then Refersion will attribute the order to the affiliate that is associated with the coupon code. Two affiliate coupon codes are used on a single order.

In this scenario in theory Refersion could attribute the same order to multiple affiliates, but then you would owe duplicate commission on a single order!

As mentioned before, in general Refersion is not designed to attribute a single order to multiple affiliates. The Refersion platform also does not attribute multiple conversions of the same type (coupon, link, email) on a single order. This means that in this scenario, only one coupon conversion will be created. In particular, the affiliate with the oldest assigned coupon trigger will receive credit for the order.
